April 10, Sunday

Main Street Church, Arcana Glen

Evangeline was surprised when they pulled up in front of a rambling old house in the woods instead of in the trailer park. All the Grayhide Families that she knew lived in the trailer park next to the freeway on the way into Arcana Glen, but this house looks like it had been worthy of once being called a mansion, back in the 1930s perhaps. It looked dilapidated now, the paint peeling and the wood buckled, as if it had been only haphazardly repaired.

“What is this place?” she asked.

“This is their… They call it their pack house.” He shrugged.

“Pack? Like a wolf pack, or something?”

“Yeah, pretty much exactly that.”

“What’s with their family and the wolf mascot? Anyone would think they were a High School or a football team. Your family does that too, with the whole obsession with Bighorn Mountain Sheep. It’s kind of weird. Normal families don’t usually have mascots.

He laughed bitterly. “You’re not missing anything.”

“Maybe I am,” she said. “Maybe we should get a mascot too. What animal do you think it should be?”

He grinned at her, but he refused to answer. “I think you have to pick your own mascot.”

“Should we get out of the car?” she asked.

“No,” he said. “We should wait here until they notice us. Actually, I can guarantee they’ve already noticed it. We should wait until they invite us to come out into their territory. As long as we stay in the car, they won’t consider this an attack. But we need to let them make the first move.”

“You make it sound so complicated.”

Again, he simply shrugged. “It is what it is.”

Nobody moved from the dilapidated mansion, and Evangeline begin to wonder if anyone lived there at all. She wondered what they would do if no one came out of the house. How long would he want to wait here before he gave up and drove back to town? To distract herself she continued her earlier conversation, trying to keep the discussion light and playful.

“Why do mascots always have to be big burly animals? Predators, or at the very least, aggressive masculine animals like Bighorn Mountains sheep.”

“You think sheep are aggressive and masculine?” He seemed oddly pleased by that.

“It wasn’t a compliment.”

“I’m still going to take it as one.” He grinned at her.

She hit his arm playfully. “You’re impossible.”

Something flashed in his eyes, and she looked away, blushing for no obvious reason.

Anyway. He cleared his throat. “Not all mascots are predators or big. I’m sure you’ve been to The Sugar Bunny or to Bun & Bao? The families both have a bunny ‘mascot.’ Nothing scary about that.” He chuckled. “I’ve always felt bad for the boys have that family, actually.” After a moment he added, “Not that they had any trouble getting girls… Settling down with one girl, maybe, but those boys sure know how to play the field…”

“Is that with the mascot is for? Getting girls?” teased Evangeline.

“In High School, I guess that’s mostly what we thought about back then.
